About Bovehay Down Woodland Weddings

Established in 1992 and owned by the Sweetland family, Bovehay Down is working organic farm. Based in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the wedding venue and campsite overlooks the beautiful Coly Valley in Devon. Head chef and owner, Pamela Sweetland, specialises in delicious Devon fare all made with homegrown or very local ingredients from her farm kitchen.

We believe our quiet, rural retreat is perfect for couples looking for an original and beautiful wedding setting. Our venue is authentic and not commercial in anyway, so if this what you are looking for you’re in the right place!

Originally the farm did not exist, the fields were once a part of several other local farms. In the 1800s the land, where Bovehay Down sits today, was owned by two of the area’s most notable land owners: Reverend Thomas Putt (d. 1844), of Combe House, Gittisham; and Sir Edmund Saunderson Prideaux, 9th Baronet (1793–1875), of Netherton Hall, Farway.

‘Bovehay Down’ is derived from the name of the field where the farm is now located. ‘Bove’ is an Old English word meaning “land above the village” and ‘Hay(e)’ is another Old English word meaning “land enclosed by hedges” and so it became known as Bovehay Down.

The Farm

Our smallholding is currently home to 24 cows and calves, 7 geese and 6 ducks, we also have an orchard and bluebell’s lace through our woodlands in the spring.

It’s also home to our beautiful campsite and we have a little secret spot up our sleeves for couples that choose to get married at Bovehay. Beautifully tucked away in our orchard are our secluded glamping retreats with the best views of the Farway valley.

Usually the campsite is reserved exclusively for your guests, and we have two retro caravans available for hire for those less inclined to camping.

Bovehay Down is also lovely spot to host vow renewals, hen parties, weekends away, engagement parties and any other events you might have in mind. If you would like to speak to Pam or visit Bovehay Down in person, just give our team a call today to arrange.
